(2/4) Algorithms: Why You See What You See in Your Feeds

Now that we are familiar with the nature of algorithms, what does each look like on the different social media platforms?

FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM, TIKTOK, & TWITTER:

Although there is no clearly defined answer to what the algorithm is, we can draw a lot of similar correlations between the four platforms.

The algorithm on these platforms operates very similarly and favors the following elements:

  1. INTERESTS: What you engage with whether it is still image content, video content, keeping track of the themes and trends of the content, as well.

  2. TIMELINESS: Even though your feed is curated by what you like to see the most, there is an element of chronological order attached to this, as well.

  3. RELATIONSHIP: The algorithm is tracking who you engage with the most and they prioritize this content on your feed.

  4. FREQUENCY: How frequently you use the platform helps the algorithm figure out what exact type of content you like to see.

  5. # OF FOLLOWERS: The number of followers that you have affects the amount of content that people see.

YOUTUBE:

YouTube's algorithm curates its personalization of content, typically long form video based on your user WATCH HISTORY and the actions that you perform, such as your ENGAGEMENTS on other content on the platform.

It also tracks the viewing performance of the content that you do consume, specific to YOU.

Whether you watch it all the way through or end it and switch to another, it will keep track of this to better curate its video suggestions for you to watch.

It also KEEPS TRACK OF THE INTERESTS AND THE TYPES OF CONTENT that you watch.

Example: If you're typically watching sports highlights, you will most likely get sports highlights or anything sports related in your suggested video feed.

LINKEDIN:

Although LinkedIn has a separate algorithm that isn't clearly defined, there are CERTAIN TYPES OF CONTENT THAT ARE HEAVILY FAVORED and are shown in better ranking in your feed.

Here are some examples of the LINKEDIN ALGORITHM'S FAVORITE CONTENT:

  • Question based posts breaking news

  • Industry happenings

  • Video based posts

  • Image based posts

  • Employee centric content

  • Current events

  • Award winnings

  • Professional advice
